It has been reported that nearly $71 billion USD were spent in federally sponsored research at universities in 2018. However only an approximate $3 billion USD of licensing revenue was recognized in 2018 by universities. In other words, research provides a return to the university about 4% of the time. The challenges associated with converting research to the market are formidable. Given these challenges, it is essential that technology transfer offices are using best practices to optimize the chances for success.
