Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission announces grant recipients

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission (KBBC), chaired by Bill Gorton, a Member of Stites & Harbison, PLLC, is pleased to announce seven recipients of the Paula Nye Memorial Education Grant made possible with funds generated by the sale of “Share the Road” license plates by Kentucky motorists. Grant recipients include:

• Ashland/Boyd Co. Health Department’s Complete Streets Campaign & Rodeo - $10,000
• Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop’s Maintenance Training and Facility Relocation (Lexington) - $10,955
• City of London Wellness Park - $3,790
• Kentucky Rails to Trails Council’s Statewide Bike/Walk Summit - $15,000
• Kentucky Youth Advocates’ Complete Street Web Campaign (Louisville) - $10,000
• Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Staff/Student/Community Health Campaign (Ashland) - $2,492.45
• YMCA of Central KY’s Bicycle Rider Education Class - $4,700

KBBC is dedicated to representing the interests of bicyclists throughout the Commonwealth and promoting the best interests of the bicycling public to governing officials and the public at large. Members of the board are Melanie Bailey-Riffe (Ashland), Helen Siewers (Elizabethtown), Cheryl Wyatt (Lexington), Katie McBride (Louisville), David Sutton (London) and Jason Ramler (Northern Kentucky). “With these grants being available from support of license plate fees, Kentucky is coming to the forefront in acknowledging the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Bill Gorton, chair of KBBC. “Fortunately, cycling ranks near the top in people’s choices. It is important to get the word out to promote a healthier lifestyle.”
