Attorney Doug Bates honored as Distinguished Alumni at Indiana University Southeast

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Indiana University (IU) Southeast recently honored attorney Doug Bates of Stites & Harbison, PLLC with the Distinguished Alumni Award. The university honors one Distinguished Alumni per year for outstanding contributions to the community, the university and one’s profession. This award, which was instituted in 1998, is the highest honor the Alumni Association can bestow upon a graduate. Representatives from the Alumni Board of Directors and University officials compose the committee to select the honoree.

Doug Bates is Member (Partner) of Stites & Harbison based in the Jeffersonville, Ind., office. He regularly defends aviation clients, including airlines, major municipal airports, product manufacturers, aircraft mechanics and fixed base operators. Bates also represents clients in product liability litigation, nursing home litigation, lender liability litigation and complex business litigation matters. In addition, he represents several insurance clients with respect to coverage disputes.

Bates earned his B.A. in History in 1989 from Indiana University Southeast and later earned his J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis in 1992. He served as a member of the IU Southeast Alumni Board of Directors for ten years and served as president of the IU Southeast Alumni Association for four years. In 2010, he received the President’s Award from the IU Alumni Association.

Outside of the university, Bates has volunteered his time with organizations such as Boy Scouts of America and Junior Achievement.
