Beyond capabilities once enjoyed only by commercial broadcasters or governments, social media has empowered ordinary people to instantaneously communicate information worldwide. At its best, social media has given voice to oppressed people, has been used to mobilize political opinion, or has served as a channel of communications in emergencies.
